But other components are also important and you can't ignore them completely.
There should be a balanced approach when buying the best laptop for Revit or BIM modeling.
The reason is quite simple, if you go with a really high speed CPU but a slow SSD or maybe RAM then the CPU won't get data fast enough to process keeping it idle most of the time.
This will negate all the advantages of a faster CPU, and it's what we call a hardware bottleneck that you should avoid.
In this article I have shared all the hardware specs that you should consider when buying the laptop for Revit.

Processor
Revit is greatly dependent on single core performance so you will benefit more from higher clock speeds of a single core than from more cores in your processor.
But recently Revit is making more use of multiple cores with new releases of Revit software and with every new release, they are also planning to make more use of multiple cores.
So, it’s recommended that you do consider a CPU with at least 8 core minimum.
Also go with a minimum of 3GHZ base clock speed for the processor and if it supports overclocking then great.
There are processes like opening model, rendering, creating exports that take advantage of multiple cores so it’s always good to have more cores.
More cores also help in keeping your other “Revit cores” free for task when working with several software as they can use other cores making room for Revit to perform better.
GPU (Graphics Card)
For rendering Revit still greatly depends on CPU but with the latest rendering engine update it has started making more use of GPU.
Tasks like 3D navigation, ray tracing, global illumination (which is a relatively new addition to Revit), and other display related things leverage GPU speed and memory.
So, considering all of these facts its needless to say, you should stay away from integrated graphics cards and also stay away from the graphics cards not supporting DirectX.
In fact, in 2023 Revit has changed its hardware certification status favoring graphics cards that support the DirectX version, shader model version and GPU memory that support hardware acceleration for your Revit software.
So, to get the best performance from Revit I would also recommend that you keep hardware acceleration ON all the time.
This will help display larger models faster and switching views will be smooth as well.

So, if the GPU supports it all and go for it.
Historically though Autodesk had a pretty small list of only NVIDIA Quadro and AMD FirePro graphics cards as supported GPU’s.
But if you are not an enterprise that always needs the best machine for Revit no matter the cost than other graphics cards like Nvidia GeForce and RTX cards will work perfectly fine.
So, as you can see you can also use gaming graphics cards for Revit but for better stability try to stick with driver updates that are more stable as gaming graphics cards tend to get frequent updates and that may sometimes create stability issue.
So, in a nutshell a 4GB VRAM on a professional graphics card (or gaming card as well) will provide the stability and performance that you need for almost all Revit workflows.
RAM
Revit file RVT is a compressed file which is opened in the system memory when you use Revit.
This compression ratio is about 20 times the original file. Which means that a 1 GB Revit file will decompress to become a 20 GB file approximately.
So, you should always consider keeping enough RAM available based on the file sizes that you typically work with.
As an example, let’s say I work with a typical file size of 300 MB approximately. So, for that I need 6000 MB of RAM or 5.8 GB.
But Revit is not the only software you will be working with on your PC so keep some room for other processes as well.
So, in this case I will go with an absolute minimum of 8 GB of RAM.
But even in the above scenario I would recommend at least 16 GB of RAM as it leaves plenty of breathing space for Revit files and RAM sticks are usually very cheap.
If you work with even larger models, then you should go with 32 or 64 GB of RAM or at least get a system that supports it so that you can upgrade it later.
Also do consider getting a high-speed memory rather than sticking with the one that simply supports your system.
A slower memory has the potential of creating a bottleneck where high speed CPU might remain idle if RAM is not fast enough to send the required data.
Storage
Gone are the days of hard disks so don’t select a relic of prehistoric age and always select an SSD.
They are silent, lightweight and best of all very fast when compared with a hard disk.
All your Revit files are actually stored on these disks so a faster disk can transfer these files at a fast rate to your RAM for decompressing and that will greatly improve performance.
This will also stop any performance bottlenecks where faster RAM won’t sit idle waiting for data from SSD.
Cooling vents
This is surprisingly a thing that gets almost no attention, but it can make a significant impact on the overall performance of Revit.
In the absence of colling will Revit machine will keep crashing and if it doesn’t crash it will perform slowly and unreliably.
So, it’s always good to check if you have sufficient ventilation in your PC or Laptop and also keep your machine in a well-ventilated place so that its ventilation ports are not blocked.
